In-Demand Skills to Learn from Online Courses That Will Complement Any Resume

In-Demand Skills to Learn from Online Courses That Will Complement Any Resume Photo Via: Pixabay.com 1. Academic Writing One of the first, and most important, items on this list is the ability to write academically. While it’s safe to assume you will need to do very little academic writing once you graduate from college, the skills you obtain from academic writing will translate into any position that you obtain. Writing is such a huge part of business communication, which means it’s essential to maintain a professional and direct tone in your business writing, which all stems from academia. Writing a paper is not all that different from writing a report, or a proposal, or a business agenda. Basic writing skills are going to be useful throughout your career, so taking any online writing courses will surely benefit you in the long run. 2. Excel While most individuals have worked with excel by the time they move into a full-time position, they only have the basic skills needed to create a basic spreadsheet. However, the more advanced the skills you have in excel are, the more likely you are to catch the eye of the hiring manager. Excel comes into play in many ways, including, but not limited to, accounting, metrics reports, human resources data storing, goal completion tracking, etc. Basically, in any potential role, there is room for excel usage, which means that having the skills necessary to create complex and useful spreadsheets is a resource that employers find very valuable. If you can take an online course that offers any form of excel expertise, it’s in your best interest to take it, no matter the field you are planning to go into. 3. HTML While hiring individuals with coding experience is in high demand at the moment, basic HTML experience is also useful in a variety of ways. Basically, there are very few individuals that are technologically capable within a company, and many hiring managers opt to hire individuals to take on that role in full. For that reason, if you have even basic HTML experience, you could end up being very valuable to the hiring manager in question, as you have experience that’s going to help them without them having to hire outside help. For many organizations, hiring individuals with this expertise results in outsourcing certain projects or bringing on consultants to save money. With the experience under your belt, you eliminate this need, thus increasing your potential value with an organization. 4. Organizational Skills Easily the most important item on this list, individuals are looking for organizational skills when they bring on a new employee. This doesn’t simply mean that your desk should be neat and tidy, but rather, that you can keep track of deadlines, manage a heavy workload and maintain your email inbox so that you don’t lose sight of important action items. Staying organized is key in this manner, as there are countless individuals at companies that don’t have these organizational skills, which causes problems for their managers, their departments and, sometimes, the company as a whole. Online classes teach you to stay organized by necessity, as you are responsible for your own schooling, keeping you accountable to yourself, much like is done in the business world. 5. Email Etiquette It seems ridiculous, but composing a work-appropriate, professional email is much more in demand than you would think. The basic email etiquette is a learned skill, and many individuals within companies don’t have it. For one, there is the issue of “replying all” when an email doesn’t call for it, composing a direct, non-wordy body and using the proper greeting and signature. Most employers plan to teach new hires the proper etiquette prior to their start, but it’s easy enough for you to simply take a course online now and learn the skills yourself, prior to even starting a position. While this isn’t the most important in-demand skill, it is going to set you apart from the competition and could just be the difference between you getting an interview or not. Infographic Via Canva 6. Management Skill While you should never expect to begin a new position at the managerial level, having basic management skills before you even start a new position is a great way to stand out from the crowd. Basically, this is the perfect leg up. Management skills are always useful, whether you have direct reports now or will be getting them sometime in the near future. These skills teach you how to be a team player, how to work well with others and how to delegate tasks effectively. Again, not all of this information is going to be immediately relevant to you in your first role, but it is useful information to have in your back pocket when a potential employer is taking a look at your resume. 7. SEO For those of you that aren’t familiar with the term, the term SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO experience is very valuable to employers, as it helps your business to stay relevant, in front of your intended audience and at the top of your game. Many businesses use this to rank on Google (which means their website appears as one of the first options for a certain search term), but they can also be used in social media posts, blog posts and any other marketing collateral your business puts out there. Again, no matter what industry you plan to work in (though certain industries, such as marketing, will find this skill more valuable), having SEO experience is a huge plus when an employer is looking at a resume. Most employers don’t have this experience, hiring outside consultants to run their ads and deal with this matter, which means that when you have the experience, you become more helpful to your manager. Online courses tend to teach basic SEO skills, which is really all you need to get started, as a lot of experience comes from practice. The more you work with SEO, the more likely you are to become an expert in this regard, which will always be of benefit to your employer. Even if it means you are simply making suggestions to the marketing department in organizational meetings, this is a great skill to have and you will find your employer finds it just as useful as you do. 8. Certifications Again, no matter the field you are in, there are many certification programs out there, many of them also online, that you should be taking advantage of. Some certification programs are more beneficial than others, but most act as resume buffers no matter what. As previously mentioned, management certification courses are always an option, but there are countless others that are worth looking into. This requires a bit more research on your end, as you should always look up the field you are planning on going into, what certifications are valuable in that field, and then look in your course directory to see if there are any courses in that field available to you. The more research you do, and the more certifications you obtain, the more likely your resume is to stand out in front of a potential employer, even if you don’t have any work experience. Also keep in mind that there are certification programs that potentially raise your starting salary, as they are essentially the equivalent of having another degree. Always know your worth and be sure to fully look into these programs to get a better idea of what will work for you and what won’t. Just be careful not to price yourself out of consideration! 9. Communication Skills Communication is key. The phrase is a popular one for a reason; it’s true. Having the proper communication skills is essential to any successful career, just ask anyone. Employers, when looking at the resume of an entry level candidate, look for keywords, such as communication, to ensure they have a candidate that they can work with. While a lot of this information is going to come out during an interview, it’s also an essential item to list on your resume to ensure you are getting that interview. Basically, if you don’t have basic communication skills, no employer is going to want to work with you, which means that you aren’t going to get that initial interview. However, if you do list these communication skills, and if you took an online course that expanded these skills beyond the basic subset that most college graduates will have, your resume is going to stand out and you will be more likely to be selected to interview. Whether soft communication skills or hard, writing-related communication skills, any additional experience you have is well worth it. And, if that’s the case, you can allow those communication skills to shine in the interview, landing the job all because of one online course that set your path exactly where you needed it to go. 10. Work Ethic The best was saved for last, and that’s because it’s an intangible item that most individuals don’t give two thoughts to. Employers often find more of the same when hiring new candidates, and it’s difficult to trust an individual to work hard when they don’t have an apparent work ethic. Nine times out of ten, if you list experience with online courses, outlining the relevance to your work ethic, you’re going to land an interview. Employers want employees that are going to work harder than everyone else, as they already have enough direct reports to worry about. The less your employer needs to worry that you’re doing what needs to be done, the less stress they will have on their end. All online courses are courses in work ethic, as attendance isn’t mandatory and all the work falls to you. It’s very easy to skimp out on your online courses and do the bare minimum, but attending each course, finishing the lesson plans and readings, and acing the tests will ensure that your work ethic is one an employer is interested in. Make sure that you are highlighting this experience in your cover letter, as this is very relevant and will undoubtedly be helpful in improving your resume as a whole. Photo Via: Pixabay.com The job market is a pretty vast area, and while unemployment rates may be fairly low, that’s not to say that finding the right job is a cakewalk. It’s important that you are adding as much to your resume as possible, especially when you don’t have any “real world” experience. For this reason, ensure you are taking the right courses throughout your college career to complement your resume, even without job experience. Online courses are a fantastic way to achieve this, as they provide you a relaxed environment and offer cover more topics than the typical, classroom setting. Be aware that online classes also tend to be shorter in nature, which means that you are learning the same amount of information in a small amount of time, so ensure you are making the most of the classes you attend rather than simply signing up in order to get the credits without having to leave your apartment. So long as you take advantage of the courses and truly implement the practices you learn in your career, your resume will be a shining example of what it means to be a dedicated student and a competent employee. Happy job hunting!

How to Scream Sing Without Hurting Your Vocal Cords

How to Scream Sing  Without Hurting Your Vocal Cords Suzy S. Do you love metal, punk, or screamo music? As a vocalist, youll need to take extra precautions if youre singing in these styles. Read on for tips from Austin, TX teacher  Gfire M... I live in Austin, Texas, the “live music capital of the world,” so I have worked with loads of vocalists who sing in touring rock bands. Some of these students only have one section of a song in which they scream others scream for an entire set so I work with them to not hurt their vocal cords. Here are my vocal tips to keep in mind. 1. Breathing Exercises and Vocal Warm-ups No matter what type of singing you do, before you head out on stage, it is a good idea to do some breathing exercises to control your notes and some singing exercises to warm up your entire vocal range, even notes that you don’t use on stage. Do these warm-ups for 10-30 minutes and you will be more relaxed and confident for your set. 2. Plan Your Set If you know that one song is really going to be full-on screaming, perhaps plan the next song to be a relatively easy one for you vocally. Obviously, this will not work if your entire set is scream-o. 3. Do Your Cardio and Core Strengthening Training Any type of rock singing tests the physical limits of the vocalist, so it is a good idea to have a workout plan. Cardio exercises increase your lung capacity, and core strengthening gives you more support when you go for those yelled notes. 4. Drink Plenty of Water and Keep Some On Stage In rehearsals, in warm-ups, and on stage, it is essential to keep your vocal instrument hydrated. Either room temperature or warm liquids are ideal for singers and screamers, since cold drinks tend to constrict the throat. 5. Know Your Notes! Even if you are screaming a note in a song, you need to know what note it is so that you can scream in tune. Screaming in tune will help your band sound cohesive it is just as important as tuning the guitar and bass for keeping your sound musical. Plus the added confidence in knowing where to aim your voice is essential for keeping your voice in good shape. 6. Drink Alcohol After Your Set Alcohol is too drying for your voice and will exacerbate any ill effects screaming does to your throat. If you are a drinker, wait until after your set is over. Before and during the set you need to stay hydrated in order for you to scream successfully and consistently. 7. Stay Healthy! Do your best to eat a well-balanced diet and get plenty of sleep. Your body is your instrument, after all! If you need more tips and techniques, you may wish to work with a singing coach who specializes in teaching how to scream sing. He or she can help you develop your screaming technique and personal habits to ensure you a full lifetime of singing and screaming well. Rob Halford of the heavy metal band Judas Priest, for example, studied singing technique and he is able to successfully scream sing after decades of constant touring. Some singers are born to scream so if you are that type of singer, put your vocal care plan into place and plan to scream for a very long time! Online Volume of Square Pyramid Tutors

Online Volume of Square Pyramid Tutors A pyramid is a 3-dimensional solid geometric figure consisting of a base, andtriangles are placed on each side of this base. A square pyramid is a pyramid whose base is a square and it consists of 4 triangles placed on the base. The line joining the center of the base to the tip of the pyramid is known as the height of the pyramid. Volume of a square pyramid is the measure of the space contained inside the pyramid and can be calculated using its volume formula. Example 1: Find the volume of a square pyramid whose base length is 2m and the height is 6m? Given base length of the pyramid, b = 2m Height of the pyramid, h = 6m Volume of the pyramid, V = 1/3 * Area of the base * height Area of the square base = b2 = (2m)2 = 4m2 Volume of the square pyramid, V = 1/3 * 4m 2 * 6m = 8m3 Therefore, volume of the given square pyramid, V = 8m3 Example 2: Find the volume of a square pyramid whose base length is 10cm and the height is 15cm? Given base length of the pyramid, b = 10cm Height of the pyramid, h = 15cm Volume of the pyramid, V = 1/3 * Area of the base * height Area of the square base = b2 = (10cm)2 = 100cm2 Volume of the square pyramid, V = 1/3 * 100cm 2 *15cm = 500cm3 Therefore, volume of the given square pyramid, V = 500cm3

Play Thousands of Songs Using these Guitar Chord Progressions

Play Thousands of Songs Using these Guitar Chord Progressions Megan L. Did you know there are a handful of common guitar chord progressions that are repeatedly used throughout hundreds of songs? If youve spent much time on YouTube, you might be familiar with the Axis of Awesome. In their popular video, the Axis of Awesome performs a compilation of around 50 songs in under six minutes, all while using the same guitar chord progression. The video is very entertaining as it creatively reveals a secret that professional musicians have known for decades. Guitar Chord Progressions to Play Thousands of Songs Although most popular songs are based on just a handful of guitar chord progressions, sometimes the chords are modified (adding a 7th or 9th for example). They can also be played in a different order, or using different instruments and grooves. So to the untrained ear it may be hard to detect the same underlying chord structure. Once you understand how the most common guitar chord progressions work, it will open the door for you to play thousands of songs easily. Lets start by learning about some of the most basic guitar chords. 5 Basic Guitar Chords If youre just getting started on the guitar, youll want to learn a few basic chords first. The chord charts below show five of the most common open chords. Open chords are chords where some of the strings are played open, without holding down any of the frets. To read the chord charts, imagine that the top line of the chart is the nut, where the neck of the guitar meets the headstock. Each of the six vertical lines represent a guitar string, with the low E string at the far left and high E at the far right. Each horizontal line represents a different fret on the fretboard. The numbers along the bottom of the chart let you know which finger on your left hand should fret each string. Your left hand fingers are numbered one through four, starting with your index finger. For example, to play the A chord as pictured above, hold down the D string with your middle finger on the second fret, the G string with your ring finger on the second fret, and the B string with your pinkie finger on the second fret. Now, strum from the A string down. The X at the top of the diagram indicates that you should not strum the low E string. Understanding Guitar Chord Progressions A chord progression is a pattern of usually three or four chords that is repeated throughout a song. Some songs use a couple different guitar chord progressions, switching back and forth for the verse and the chorus. You might find other songs that use a single chord progression the whole way through. Many musicians use what is known as the Nashville System to talk about chord progressions. For example, lets look at the common chord progression C-F-G, also known as I-IV-V in C. On the Nashville number system, each note in the scale is given a number one through seven, written as a Roman numeral. The root note of the scale is I. In our example, C is I, the root note. F is the fourth note in the scale, IV, and G is the fifth, V. The Nashville system encourages musicians to focus more on the relationships between notes rather than the notes themselves. This is particularly helpful if you are playing with a singer or another musician and they ask you to change the key you are playing. Rather than scrambling to transpose the song, using your familiarity with the relationships between guitar notes, you can quickly and easily switch keys. I-IV-V Chord Progressions Common guitar chord progressions like G-C-D, A-D-E, and E-A-B are all examples of the I-IV-V chord progression in action. So the next time you are looking at a song and you see one of these sequences, you will know you are looking at a I-IV-V chord progression. The I-IV-V chord progression forms the foundations of countless classic songs and contemporary favorites. According to Ultimate Guitar, the I-IV-V progression, with slight variations, can be used to play the following songs: Imagine by John Lennon or Everybody Talks by Neon Trees (I-IV) The Gambler by Kenny Rogers or Where Everybody Knows Your Name from Cheers (I-V) Basket Case by Green Day or Youre Beautiful by James Blunt (I-IV-V-I) All the Small Things by Blink-182 or Born This Way by Lady Gaga (I-V-IV-I) I-V-vi-IV Chord Progressions Want to learn to play all the songs from the Axis of Awesome video we shared about? If youre just starting out on the guitar, changing from one chord to another quickly and smoothly might be challenging for you. Choose a chord progression and practice strumming each chord slowly and evenly for four counts. Try to keep your transitions on tempo with the pace you are playing. Once you feel comfortable changing chords, try playing one song in a few different keys. As you play, sing or hum along to hear the difference. Try playing Amazing Grace as pictured above in the key of C and then move it to the key of G. Changing keys helps you to hear the relationships between notes, which makes it easier for you to develop your ear. Write Songs of Your Own Another great way to apply these guitar chord progressions is in writing your own songs. Dont feel like you have to use only these chords. Instead, use them as a starting point to explore your musical vision. If youre just beginning to write your own music, it helps to know which chords will sound good together. Try taking one of the tried and true chord progressions youve just learned and put your own spin on it by adding or subbing a new chord, or playing it with a funky rhythm. So You Want to Become a Singer Heres How to Get There

So You Want to Become a Singer Heres How to Get There Suzy S. Private lessons? Check. Big dreams? Check! But theres one more part of the equation thats integral to become a singer and reach your career goals. Find out as Monclova, OH teacher Carrie A. explains I cant tell you how many students over the years have come to me saying they wanted to be on TV or Broadway. While those are great aspirations to go after, it really isnt the place to start to become a singer. What I have found is a great way to get started is to look for opportunities to perform right in your own community. It is seriously a huge long shot to go from never performing at all, to being chosen for some sort of reality show. Without preparation and experience, it can really be a recipe for disaster. I have performed in front on thousands of people numerous times, including once at Carnegie Hall. I, however, did not start there. I participated in lots of community theater, performed at weddings, did gigs at coffee shops, and performed at other small-scale venues before I had more distinguished opportunities. I understand the desire to perform in front of large audiences, but I strongly encourage my students to take advantage of every opportunity they have to perform, whether big or small. Every performance is an opportunity to learn, grow, and have fun. Im going to give you some suggestions that I have given to my students that have opened lots of doors for them. First, get a set list together. Whether you are a vocalist or instrumentalist, you need to have at least 10 songs prepared that you can use if someone gives you the opportunity to perform. Dont be in a hurry with this step. Look for songs that mean something to you and flow well together. Work with your music instructor to find what fits you and go with that. Second, gear up for rejection. You will be told no, probably multiple times. Dont stop until you get a yes! Im a professional singer and Ive had to deal with the same thing. Dont take it personally, just move on and get excited for when someone says yes. Third, connect with area charity organizations and ask if they need music at their next fundraiser. It will be a chance to use music to strengthen the community and possibly create more connections for future performances. Fourth, think of places you can give back and get performance experience at the same time. For example, lots of nursing homes will jump at the chance to have you come and entertain their guests. Finally, dont look down on any opportunity that comes your way. Remember in the beginning its all about getting yourself out there and letting people know you are available, and honing your skills at the same time. If that means you start by singing the national anthem at a local high school basketball game, so be it. One of my students did that very thing and now is invited by major car racing events to do the national anthem where she sings in front of 30,000 people and the event is televised. Bottom line in the beginning nothing is too small if you really want to become a singer. Enjoy where you are and build to a great future in music!
